In The Gambia, a controversial political push threatens to overturn the country’s ban on female genital mutilation (FGM) — a practice the United Nations classifies as a severe human rights violation affecting nearly three quarters of Gambian women and girls.

Across several reporting trips, filmmaker Sira Thierij follows activists fighting to defend the ban and challenge a deeply rooted tradition, documenting a country at a critical turning point for women’s rights.

Directed, produced, filmed and edited by Sira Thierij, the film was supported by the Pulitzer Center and recognized by the Rory Peck Awards.
